Beyond Björk: A soundtrack for Iceland

Iceland is high on many people’s travel bucket lists. You can’t move for incredible shots of its dramatic landscape on Twitter. And quite right too. It’s freakin’ amazing.

But there’s another armchair-friendly way to conjure the spirit of some of its best qualities – the otherworldly atmosphere, the quirk, the desolate beauty, the folky charm: through music.

Here are some of my picks for an Icelandic soundtrack to capture the ethereal beauty of this remarkable rock sat atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Nordic Playlist is an incredible resource for discovering your own favourites, and Auður over at I heart Reykjavik (your go-to blog for any trip to Iceland) also has a bunch of great recommendations.

And for an enchanting montage of Iceland’s brooding nature and mesmerising music, check out the Sigur Rós documentary Heima – if you can catch it at Reykjavik’s arthouse cinema and bar Bíó Paradís, all the better.
